Homily – Our Lord’s Lessons at the Table (Holy Ancestors)

Would you heal the sick (or love the unloved, or feed the hungry)
on the Sabbath?  Take the lowest seat at the table?  Invite the lowly to your feast?
More importantly, will you set everything aside for the Lord’s Feast?

Today’s reading is a parable about a “great supper”.  One of the interesting things about this parable is the setting: it actually takes place during a supper.
Supper as a place to learn and share.  It should be ritualized.: a habit that contains and reinforces our love for one another and our civilization [exhortation] to eat together]….  here are three of the major lessons that Christ shares at this supper.
1.  You should do good on the Sabbath (and you should NOT do bad).
2.  Take the lowly place.  Humility.  Not false modesty.  First among sinners.  Appreciation.  Christ deigned to eat with sinners.
3.  Invite everyone until the place is full, without regard for anything.  People who are not hungry, people who have better things to do, people who do not respect you will not come.  So find people who are hungry and invite them. They will be the best guests: they will appreciate the food and the hospitality.
Main lesson: God has sent His Son to invite you to the banquet: will you be hungry?  will you have better things to do?  do you respect him enough to com?
If so, prepare to feast! “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”   If not, he will not force you, but your food will run out far before His does.
